Residential building (1958-1960)
via San Calocero 2-4 (Milano)
via San Calocero 2-4 (Milano)
Between 1958 and 1960, Gho' designs and completes a new apartment block in Milan, split between two different properties. A specific master plan for the site had already been agreed with the Comune di Milano: Gho' starts from this preliminary proposal and enhances the scheme, by removing a central atrium and two minor blocks leaning against the main building. The proposed new design shows a symmetric building, tucked away from the street line, and leaving more space to the two small gardens facing via San Calocero and via San Vincenzo.
To address the needs coming from the two clients, the Milanese architect designs a building which - although possessing a unitary formal approach -is split in two completely independent sections: the west wing belongs to the Leva family, whereas the east wing is owned by the Società Anonima Immobiliare S.a. Icsa, both with independent access and circulation routes. Both the staircases and the lift cores allow access to two to four apartments on each level. To define the two wings, Gho' designs the two staircases with different shapes: the Lena property has an elegant single flight staircase, whereas the Società Anonima Immobiliare has a more traditional circular staircase with central lift.
The apartments include different layouts with various sizes and different types of loggias and balconies, a variety of elements which is noticeable from the elevations. The building is cladded in coloured Gres mosaic tiles; the openings of the service rooms and the top floor loggias are screened by a perforated wall treatment made in clinker.
