Chalet in Ferret Valley (1975), Planpincieux, Courmayeur
In 1975 Gigi Gho' designs and builds a holiday house for his family in the small village of Planpincieux, near Courmayeur. The building, realised according to the traditional construction system of the alpine architecture, represents an example of how it is possible to make landscape and history coexist with modernity, as taught by the masters of the Milanese Rationalism. Free from any client constraints - showing a rare landscaping sensitivity - Gho’ positions a contemporary architectural piece in the contest of the Ferret valley in perfect continuity with the low-density urban surroundings.
The house is characterised by two simple cladding materials: local stone for the base and larch trunks for the envelope, the shutters, and the windows of various size. The original asymmetric pitched roof in wooden shingles plays a key role in the house formal scheme; the northern side of the roof reaches the ground creating an unusual profile and emphasising the modernity of the project. The roof treatment and the level of detail in some of the elements, such as the elegant balustrades that become part of the facade cladding, demonstrate the outstanding design accuracy, inspired by simple rational principles. The ground floor, accessible from a small entrance porch, leads to an open plan with living, dining and kitchen areas. Upstairs are located three bedrooms and two bathrooms; the basement hosts a boiler room, a cellar, and a small bathroom.
